Side chain type ionic liquid crystalline polymers having high Preliminary communication molecular weight

Side chain type ionic liquid crystalline polymers having a 4-(1,3-dioxan-2-yl)pyridinium structure in their mesogenic side chain were synthesized. These polymers exhibited the smectic A phase. The molecular weights of these ionic liquid crystalline polymers are very high, e.g. for compound 7 - 2 M _w = 486 000.     

High magnetic field solid‐state NMR analyses by combining MAS,MQ‐MAS,homo‐nuclear and hetero‐nuclear correlation experiments

A general strategy of structural analysis of alumina silicate by combining various solid‐state NMR measurements such as single pulse, multi‐quantum magic angle spinning, double‐quantum homo‐nuclear correlation under magic angle spinning (DQ‐MAS), and cross‐polarization hetero‐nuclear correlation (CP‐HETCOR) was evaluated with the aid of high magnetic field NMR (800 MHz for ¹H Larmor frequency) by using anorthite as a model material. The high magnetic field greatly enhanced resolution of ²⁷Al in single pulse, DQ‐MAS, and even in triple‐quantum magic angle spinning NMR spectra. The spatial proximities through dipolar couplings were probed by the DQ‐MAS methods for homo‐nuclear correlations between both ²⁷Al–²⁷Al and ²⁹Si–²⁹Si and by CP‐HETCOR for hetero‐nuclear correlations between ²⁷Al–²⁹Si in the anorthite framework. By combining various NMR methodologies, we elucidated detailed spatial correlations among various aluminum and silicon species in anorthite that was hard to be determined using conventional analytical methods at low magnetic field. XAFS spectra from X-ray fluorescence Kβ line using conventional energy-discriminating detector

X-ray fluorescence spectra of copper (Cu) metal, copper monoxide (CuO), and potassium chromate (K₂CrO₄) were recorded as a function of incident X-ray energy near the Cu K-edge and chromium (Cr) K-edge, respectively, using a conventional silicon drift detector. The spectra contained components due to elastic, inelastic, and multiple scattering, in addition to the Kα and Kβ lines. Cu and Cr K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra of Cu, CuO, and K₂CrO₄ were obtained by an intensity analysis of the Kα and Kβ lines. The intensity of the Kβ line for the different incident photon energies was obtained by numerically removing the additional scattering components using the MUSCAT program. These spectra exhibited a jump near the K absorption edges, which reproduced the spectral features obtained in transmission mode for both Cu, CuO, and K₂CrO₄. A chemical shift was also clearly identified in the X-ray absorption near edges structure using the X-ray fluorescence Kβ line. In addition, the Cr K-edge extended XAFS spectrum of K₂CrO₄ was clearly observed using the Cr Kβ fluorescent line. The XAFS measurements on the Kα and Kβ lines are possible, and they carry equally valuable information.     

Synthesis of well‐defined block copolymer composed of flexible amphiphilic poly(ethylene glycol) and hydrophobic liquid crystalline segments by living coordination polymerization of allene derivatives and its application to thin film with perpendicularly oriented cylindrical nanostructure

A block copolymer composed of a flexible polar poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and a less polar liquid crystalline poly(allene) segments is prepared by the living coordination polymerization of an allene derivative possessing trans‐azobenzene‐containing mesogenic substituent by the use of a π‐allylnickel macroinitiator bearing PEG segment. The thin film of the block copolymer is prepared by the spin coating of its solution onto mica or silicon wafer which proves to possess perpendicularly oriented nanocylindrical microphase separated structures as supported by the differential calorimetric, polarized optical microscopic, grazing‐incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering, transmission electron microscope, and atomic force microscope measurements.     

Synthesis and mechanochemical properties of biobased ABCBA-type pentablock copolymers comprising poly-d-lactide (A), poly-l-lactide (B) and poly(1,2-propylene succinate) (C)

The ABCBA pentablock copolymers (p-d -l -PPS) comprising poly(d -lactide) (PDLA: A), poly(l -lactide) (PLLA: B) and poly(propylene succinate) (PPS: C) were successfully synthesized by two-step ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of d - and l -lactide using a dihydroxy-terminated PPS as a macro-initiator. The pentablock copolymers revealed the high stereocomplex (sc) crystallinity, thermal stability and elastomeric property in their solution-cast films. It was found that the T_g was found to be proportional to the PPS content, whereas the T_m was proportional to their average block length. The thermal resistivity of the copolymer films was found to be as high as 202°C owing to their sc formation. The copolymers also showed improved stereocomplexibility compared to the enantiomeric mixtures of triblock copolymers (PLLA-PPS-PLLA and PDLA-PPS-PDLA) having similar PLLA and PDLA chain lengths. These pentablock copolymers can afford thermoplastic elastomers or flexible plastic materials having a 100% bio-based content, showing high heat-resistive property.     

Structures and Reaction Mechanism of Novel Metal-Carbene Complexes Derived from Hypervalent Diazadiselenathiapentalenes

Abstract

Novel metal-carbene complexes (4) with a metallapentalene framework have been obtained from hypervalent diazadiselenathiapentalenes (3) by treating with Pt(PPh₃)₄, Pd(PPh₃)₄ and RhCl(PPh₃)₃. X-Ray investigations revealed that the central hypervalent sulfur atom in 3 was substituted by a metal atom to form M-Se bonds in the resultant metallapentalene framework.     

Highly meso-Diastereoselective Pinacol Coupling of Aromatic Aldehydes Mediated by Al Powder/Copper Sulfate in Water

Pinacol-type coupling reaction products presenting a high meso-diastereoselectivity (the ratio dl/meso was 4/96 up to 1/99) were obtained in fair to good yields (24–69%) using several aromatic aldehydes as starting materials and aluminium powder/copper sulfate as catalysts, in water, under reflux conditions.
